A luxury motor yacht charter in Raja Ampat is a private, fully crewed power-yacht voyage that you hire as a whole vessel from the port of Sorong, using engine power rather than sails to cover the long open passages between the archipelago’s far-flung island groups. Because a motor yacht does not wait on wind, it reaches Wayag, Misool and Manta Sandy inside a single trip while keeping cabins stabilised and comfortable. At Luxury Raja Ampat we run our own crewed yacht fleet out of Sorong and, for the largest motor yachts and superyachts, work with vetted partner operators we disclose openly.
I am Marina Halverson, the charter and itinerary editor here. I spend each dry season aboard the fleet between Sorong, Wayag and Misool, so the routing notes below come from real sailing times and anchorages, not brochure copy. Here is how a power yacht actually performs across this region, what the cabin classes look like, and the indicative money you should budget.
Why charter a motor yacht in Raja Ampat instead of a phinisi?
Raja Ampat is enormous. The distance from Sorong to the Wayag karst group in the far north, then south again to Misool, can run well over 200 nautical miles across exposed water. That single fact drives the whole motor-yacht case.
Speed wins days back. A power yacht cruises faster across open straits than a sailing vessel relying on a fickle breeze, which means more time on the reef and less time in transit. On a tight 5 or 6-day window, that difference can decide whether Wayag even makes the route.
- Range and pace. Motor yachts hold a predictable schedule across the Dampier Strait and the long northern run, so a 7-day trip can realistically cover both the north and a slice of the south.
- Stabilised comfort. Modern hulls and stabilisers cut roll on the open crossings, which matters for families, older guests, and anyone prone to seasickness.
- Generous deck power. Bigger engines run dive compressors, full air-conditioning, watermakers and tenders without straining the vessel.
- Honest trade-off. A power yacht uses more fuel than a phinisi under sail. We factor that into the quote rather than hide it.
None of this makes a phinisi wrong. For travellers who want the romance of teak and canvas, our phinisi yacht charter raja ampat is the right call, and we lay out the full comparison in our guide to Phinisi vs Motor Yacht: Which to Charter in Raja Ampat. If sail is your preference for shorter, wind-favoured routes, look at the luxury sailing yacht charter instead. The motor yacht simply solves the distance problem better when the itinerary is ambitious.
How much faster is a motor yacht than a phinisi here?
People ask this constantly. The honest answer is: it depends on the wind on the day, which is exactly the point.
A crewed phinisi under power motors at a modest pace and under sail can be slower still when the breeze drops. A purpose-built motor yacht holds a steadier cruising speed regardless of conditions. Over a long crossing that gap compounds into hours, and hours become a lost dive or a saved one. On a Sorong-to-Wayag leg, a faster hull can turn an overnight slog into a half-day repositioning, freeing an afternoon for Manta Sandy on the way through. That is the practical reason expedition-minded guests pick power for the big loops.
Motor yacht classes and indicative cabin layouts
We group motor yachts into three working categories. Capacities and rates below are indicative starting-from figures that vary by vessel, season and inclusions, drawn from current Raja Ampat market benchmarks. They are not fixed quotes. Every booking needs a live quote from our reservations desk.
| Class | Typical guests / cabins | Indicative nightly rate (whole vessel) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-range cruiser | 2-8 guests, 2-4 cabins | ~US$4,500-7,000 / night | Couples, small families, value-minded private groups |
| Large motor yacht | 8-14 guests, 5-7 cabins | ~US$7,000-12,000 / night | Multi-family groups, dive teams, mixed-ability parties |
| Mega / superyacht (via vetted partners) | 10-16 guests, 6-8 cabins | ~US$12,000-20,000+ / night | UHNW groups, expedition routes, full white-glove service |
To translate that into a per-person sense: on a mid-range cruiser shared by a small group, a 5-day charter often works out around US$4,000-8,000 per person depending on cabin count and season. These are indicative bands only. For the full method behind the numbers, our Raja Ampat yacht charter cost and rates page breaks down every line item.
A note on the superyacht tier
Luxury Raja Ampat owns and operates its own crewed yacht and phinisi fleet for private charters across the region. The very largest motor yachts and superyachts, however, we arrange through vetted partner operators, and we say so plainly. If you proceed on one of those partner vessels, the partner may pay us a referral fee at no extra cost to you. The price you see from the partner is the price you pay; our role is matching you to the right hull and crew.
What is included on a private crewed power yacht?
A whole-vessel charter is exclusive to your party. No strangers, no fixed group schedule. A typical mid-to-large motor yacht charter from Sorong includes:
- Full crew: captain, engineer, chef, stewards and dive guides where diving is booked.
- All meals, soft drinks and most beverages prepared onboard.
- En-suite air-conditioned cabins, daily housekeeping and fresh linens.
- Tenders for landings, plus kayaks and snorkelling gear on most vessels.
- A tailored itinerary across the Dampier Strait, Wayag, Piaynemo, Misool and Cape Kri.
- Assistance arranging the Raja Ampat marine park permit and dive tags.
Diving is usually quoted separately by dive day, tank and guide. For a deeper look at the underwater side, see our dive and snorkel yacht expeditions to Misool and Wayag. And if you want the longer-format experience, the multi-day private liveaboard yacht format is the same vessel philosophy stretched across more nights at sea.
One honesty point on permits: marine-park permit and conservation-fee details are practical information, not an official guarantee. Fees and rules change. We help organise them as part of the charter, but you should confirm current requirements with the relevant authorities before you travel. Anything here about diving, health or insurance is general information, not professional dive, medical or insurance advice; consult your instructor, doctor or a licensed insurer.

Sorong and Waisai: where your charter begins
Almost every Raja Ampat motor yacht charter starts at Sorong, the West Papuan gateway city with the regional airport. Some itineraries also stage from Waisai, the administrative town on Waigeo island, depending on the route and your arrival flights.
From Sorong the classic northern loop runs out toward the Dampier Strait dive sites, up to the Wayag lagoons, across to Piaynemo’s viewpoint and back through Manta Sandy. A power yacht makes that loop comfortable on a 5 to 7-night trip. Add Misool in the south and you are looking at 7 to 10 nights to do it justice, which is exactly where the speed advantage pays off. We plan most charters in the 4 to 10-day range; longer expedition routes are available for groups who want the remote southern reefs.
Indicative trip lengths and what they cover
| Duration | Realistic coverage by motor yacht |
|---|---|
| 4-5 days | Dampier Strait core, Cape Kri, a Wayag or Piaynemo push |
| 6-7 days | Full north: Wayag, Piaynemo, Manta Sandy, Dampier dives |
| 8-10 days | North plus Misool’s southern reefs and lagoons |
Is a motor yacht right for your group?
Pick a power yacht if your itinerary is ambitious, your group includes anyone sensitive to motion, or you want to combine the far north and south without losing days. Pick sail if the journey itself is the point and your route stays within wind-friendly waters.
Most of our motor-yacht guests fall into three groups. Multi-family parties who need cabins for 8 to 14 and want the kids busy with tenders and snorkelling. Serious divers who want fast repositioning between sites. And couples on the mid-range cruiser who simply want privacy, a chef and a steady deck. Whatever the shape of your party, the whole-vessel model means the boat answers to you alone.

Fuel, range and the honest economics
Let me be candid about the part most charter pages skip. A motor yacht burns more fuel than a phinisi gliding under sail, and on a long expedition loop that fuel is a real line on the invoice. We see it most on the southern Misool legs, where the open-water mileage stacks up.
So why do guests still choose power? Because fuel buys time, and time in Raja Ampat is the scarce resource. A wind-dependent vessel can lose a full day waiting on a breeze that never fills, while a power yacht simply runs the schedule. When you price the trip per usable day on the reef rather than per night aboard, the maths often favours the motor yacht for ambitious routes. For shorter, wind-favoured runs the calculus flips, which is exactly why we keep both kinds of vessel in the conversation. We build fuel into the quote transparently rather than surprising you with a top-up later, and we will tell you honestly when a phinisi would serve your route better for less.
Booking your power yacht: how it works
The process is simple and personal. You tell us your travel dates, the number of guests, the cabins you need, and the islands at the top of your list. We come back with two or three matched vessels, an indicative all-in figure, and a draft day-by-day route shaped around real sailing times. Nothing is locked until you are happy with the boat and the plan.
For vessels we run ourselves, you book direct through our reservations desk. For the largest motor yachts and superyachts arranged via partner operators, we coordinate the introduction and itinerary; the partner contracts and prices the vessel, and any referral fee they pay us costs you nothing extra. Either way you get one point of contact who knows these waters and will be straight with you about what we operate and what we broker.
What moves the price up or down?
Three levers do most of the work:
- Vessel size and tier. A mid-range cruiser and a partner superyacht sit in different worlds. Cabin count is the biggest single driver.
- Season. Peak dry-season weeks command higher rates than shoulder periods. Booking early secures both the boat and a better window.
- Inclusions and route. Dive days, fuel for longer expedition loops, and remote southern legs all add to the base charter fee.
This is why we never publish a single fixed number. The bands on this page are honest market ranges to help you budget; your real figure comes from a tailored quote once we know your dates, party and islands.
